Between 3 and 5 in the afternoon the light comes through the old frangipani trees and it photographs beautifully. Wear comfortable shoes — the paths are steep and cobbled.
On top of Cầu Đá hill at the southern end of the city stand five French villas built in the 1920s — the seaside retreat of emperor Bảo Đại and empress Nam Phương. The colonial architecture is original, the frangipanis are ancient, and the shaded climb up makes the whole place feel like a still from Indochina.
What you really come for is the view: from the villa balconies you see the whole of Nha Trang bay, Cầu Đá port and Hòn Tre island opposite. Tour groups mostly skip it, so it stays quiet — good for anyone who likes architecture, history and a little melancholy.
