Why go to Dr Yersin's Grave (Suối Dầu)

  1. The moving last chapter of Nha Trang's "Ông Năm" story

  2. A national monument (2023) that is still quiet and unpolished

  3. On the road up to Hòn Bà — the full Yersin day in one run

Visit gently, as you would a family grave — local people still burn incense for "Ông Năm" all year round; pair it with Hòn Bà to complete the Yersin trail.

About Dr Yersin's Grave (Suối Dầu)

On a small hill in the middle of the Suối Dầu farm he founded himself, Dr Alexandre Yersin has lain since 1943, exactly as he asked: "bury me at Suối Dầu… face down, so that I may hold this piece of earth". The grave is plain and shaded by trees, and beside it stands a small shrine the local people put up to "Ông Năm". In 2023 the site was listed as a national monument.

The lane in runs through the quiet orchards of the Suối Dầu farm. It sits on the road up to Hòn Bà, so the fullest way to follow Yersin's traces is: the museum at the Pasteur Institute in the morning, the grave at Suối Dầu at midday, and his wooden house on Hòn Bà in the afternoon.

Come to Nha Trang without eating gỏi cá mai and the trip is not complete

One family, one recipe, nearly 50 years. Fish landed that morning, rolled in rice paper and dipped in a secret fish sauce — the same taste since 1977.
